The torus-shaped building, wrapped in Arabic calligraphy that spells out a poem about the future written by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, opened in February 2022 and spans seven floors of interactive exhibits on science, technology, and the regionis future.
It’s fully indoor and air-conditioned, one of the better indoor places to visit when you want a few hours out of the heat. Tickets regularly sell out, so book a slot a few days ahead rather than turning up on spec.
Our Underrated Favourite: Alserkal Avenue
If we had to pick one spot on this list, it would be this one. Alserkal Avenue is a cluster of contemporary art galleries, design studios, and independent cafés set inside converted warehouses in Al Quoz, all indoors, mostly free to walk through, and far quieter than any shopping centre. Through the hotter months, it runs a Summer Weekends programme of shows, talks, and pop-ups, so there’s usually a reason to come back.
It’s the most underrated way to spend a summer afternoon in the city, and exactly the kind of local, low-key indoor activities that rarely make the tourist roundups. Pair it with lunch at one of the on-site spots, and you have an easy half-day.
